Rugby Rules Amendment

July 1, 2019mark_gBlog, Rugby

It seems like only yesterday that world rugby has brought in some new rules are just change some existing one. I could be wrong but the last rule changes happened only last year 2018/1019 season. the changes were

  • .Uncontested scrums
  • there must be 8 players in the scrum from both team.
  • .You can kick to touch after the time has elapsed.
  • .One player on their feet and over the ball which is on the ground makes a ruck.
  • .No kicking out of the ruck

World Rugby has 6 new amendments ready to trail after the world cup this year.

They are

  1. 50:22 kick proposal: Creating space by encouraging players to drop back from the defensive line.
  2. Reduction in the number of permitted substitutions
  3. off feet at the ruck/players must leave the ball: creating greater contest at the ruck to speed up ball availability
  4. Delaying the movement of the ruck defensive line: reduce defensive line speed
  5. Lowering the tackle height: building on World Rugby’s three-phase Approach
  6. Ability to review a yellow card when a player is in the sin bin for dangerous foul play

The big one that stand out for me the 50:22 rule. This is the if the attacking team is in there now have they can kick the ball and if it bounces out before the 22 they get the line out throw. I can see this one taking a while to get use to and leading to more tries because you will have to drop some player to cover back. I could be wrong but this could be a good change.

One of the rules I don’t like is delaying the defensive line. Delaying the movement of the defensive line at the ruck until the ball has reached the first attacking player or until the receiver opts not to pass. I think this makes it just a bit too much in favour of the attacking team, but I am sure there will be a lot of people smarter them me that will be able to make these laws to work for them.

Theses laws are set to be trialed in competitions after the World Cup.
